On the water in 10 minutes to paddle with the dolphins

"There are dolphins swimming up the channel!" That was the message from Juanita at 11:00 this morning. Within about 10 minutes I had driven back from our Red Bishop guest house to Water's Edge self catering where we live, put on our costumes and were onto the water on our Carbonology Sport double surfski. And what a treat we enjoyed for the next hour on Langebaan Lagoon. A pod of about 40 Common Dolphins were herding and feeding off a school of bait fish and giving any onlookers a treat as they cavorted up and down the lagoon. Known to be totally at ease with boats and humans, they regularly swam under our boat and would swim on their sides as they came past, curiously looking at us as we admired them. The babies were also full of energy and jumping out of the water along with the adults, often at the edge of the pod, showing how relaxed they all were. A few seals swam with them, also feasting off the abundant shoal, herded together by the dolphins. In order to keep the shoal surrounded, the pod would swim in circles, or in a zigzag pattern up and down the channel. What a privilege to experience these lovely creatures, wonderfully designed by the Creator to swim with grace, speed and ease within their watery environment. And to enjoy the affinity that they seem to have with humans, harking back to a time when nature and humanity were in perfect harmony before the Fall. We got back from our paddle grateful to God for allowing us such a blessed time. We hope you will enjoy these short video clips I took while Juanita sat behind me ready to brace if we lost our balance.

Anyone for coffee? A guide to Coffee in Langebaan

Coffee! A few years ago Juanita and I were drinking pure chicory. Imagine visiting us and having to politely say "thank you" for the cup of 'coffee' we served. Well, we have come to enjoy the real thing and even invested in a semi-automatic coffee machine a while back. We even have a perfectly working Breville manual coffee maker which we picked up for R250.00 at the monthly Catholic boot sale in...

Visitors to the area may be familiar with the regular birds such as Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Pelicans, Grebes and numerous other sea birds. What is less known is the pair of Verreaux's (Black) Eagles that have nested...
